America Says Goodbye to Sunny Obama

This week, many across the country are grieving a dog who felt like she was family to all of us.

Sunny Obama, the beloved Portuguese Water Dog who joined the Obama family in the White House in 2013, died on Tuesday.

For more than a decade, we watched her race across the South Lawn, appear beside the First Family and bring warmth to one of the most recognised homes in the world.

But beyond the photographs and public appearances, Sunny was family. She was a companion to Barack and Michelle Obama, a loyal friend to Malia and Sasha, and a protective little sister to Bo, who died in 2021.

The grief being shared across the country reminds us that the loss of an animal companion reaches beyond titles, status or politics.

Love is love, and grief is grief.

Our hearts are with the Obama family and everyone who loved Sunny. We imagine her reunited with Bo, running freely together again.
