As Summer Turns

As summer begins to soften into September, the world shifts in subtle ways. The light changes, post-summer routines return, and the air carries the first hint of something ending and something beginning again.
For many people who are grieving, this kind of seasonal turning can bring loss into sharper focus.
It may be the chair by the window that still feels too still. The walk that used to be shared. The change in schedule that leaves a little more room for memory to speak. As the season turns, many of us feel the missing return in new ways.
This month, we want to say one simple thing, gently and clearly. You are not alone.
When I lost my own companion, I expected the missing. What surprised me was how many people wanted to fix it. They offered timelines, they searched for silver linings, they asked when I thought I might be ready to move on...
They meant well.
But they were trying to solve something that was never asking to be solved.
What helped me was presence.
A friend sat with me on the kitchen floor and did not rush to fill the silence. A neighbor kept feeding the squirrels we used to watch together. Someone asked me, months later, Are you still missing your cat today? That question helped because it made room for the truth. The grief was still there, and just as strong the love was still there too.
I believe with my whole heart that grief asks for companionship, not correction.
We do not honor loss by shrinking it. We honor it by telling the truth about love. We honor it by staying near one another. We honor it by refusing the pressure to make sorrow neat, brief, or easy to explain.
That is part of what this season can teach us. September does not pretend that everything stays the same. It marks a turning. It shows us how endings and continuations can live side by side. Something changes. Something remains.
Love remains.
