Editor's Note: On June 15, 2026, Marie Marseille's two-year-old dog, Jameson, was fatally shot by Los Angeles police officers responding to a call during a celebration following the New York Knicks' NBA Championship victory. Video of Marie's grief spread across social media, touching the hearts of pet lovers around the world. This letter is written in response to that loss.

Dear Marie,

My heart has been with you since I saw the viral video.

Not the headlines. Not the arguments. Not the investigation.

A video of a woman overcome with grief after losing someone she loved.

As I watched you, I wasn't thinking about politics or policy. I was thinking about the unbearable reality of what had just happened. One moment your dog was with you. The next, he was gone, lying lifeless on the cold ground in the little Knicks jersey you had probably altered to fit his frame.

It was the kind of loss that shocks the body before it reaches the mind. The kind that leaves you screaming because there are no words large enough to hold the pain.

Many people will talk about Jameson's death in the days ahead. They will debate what happened and whether it could have been prevented. Those conversations matter. But before any of that, I hope there is space to acknowledge something simple and true:

You lost someone you loved.

Jameson was not a news story to you. He was part of your daily life. He was the familiar presence in your home, the face that greeted you at the door, the companion who knew your routines and shared your days. Like so many of our animals, he asked for very little and gave so much in return.

What struck me most about your grief is that every pet parent recognizes it. We may not know you personally, but we know that look of disbelief. We know what it means to reach for a dog who is no longer there. We know the silence that follows when a beloved animal leaves us.

Today, people around the world are mourning Jameson because they understand that grief. They understand that when love is real, the loss is real too.

I wish there were words that could make this easier. There aren't. But I hope you know that your tears are being witnessed, your heartbreak is being honored, and Jameson's life mattered.

In time, the headlines will fade and the debates will move on. But what I hope people remember is not how Jameson died, but how deeply he was loved.

And from the depth of your sorrow, it is clear that he was loved beyond measure.

With compassion and heartfelt sympathy,

Thembela Makhuba
